Beyond the cages | 2000

From the world of animals and the captivity are portraited different ways of communications, they represent a careful consideration on the freedom as first need of each living being …

Charles-Henri Favrod wrote “some of them make an effort to propose a new point of view and work exclusively inside nature. It is true that it is represented by national parks where the danger of ferocious beasts is under control. Then there are the enclosures and the zoological gardens. It is mainly there that Massimiliano Camellini works, with modesty.  His pictures are not spectacular. Rather, they are the ascertainment of confinement and the humiliation it implies ….. And the photographer, accomplice, witness to this. With this aim, he is carrying on a moral commitment regarding uprooting and slavery. Behind the bars or their invisible equivalent, the insuperable trenches, the animals are under man’s permanent surveillance, when they are not the object of his molestation …. I find that Massimiliano Camellini’s message is clear. It reveals to perfection that the animals are there for our pleasure, certainly not for theirs.  And  he does not seem at all sympathetic to the reasoning of the director of the zoo, who believes that his guests should be grateful to him for having saved them from the law of the jungle.  On the contrary, Massimiliano Camellini teaches freedom.
