A RIBBON AND PRAYER
secular premises turned into sacred spaces

The ribbon evokes at the same time those objects used in many cultures as ornaments of sacred places, in order to reveal memory and faith, and even the curtain, often visible in the images, that metaphorically are able to turn a secular place in a sacred one. The exhibition space indeed, Binario49, appears as a “border place” (transformation by commercial to cultural) but even a symbol of a social revenge, so much that Sebastião Salgado chose it for the first Italian venue of his project “Africa”. The darkness surrounding the images and their installations leads the spectators to prayer and suggests the beginning of another story.
The series is presented through couples of images for each station: an image in the background showing the exterior (and the past) of the building, turned into a “guide” colour of the relevant religion, and another image, framed by the first one or exhibited as an altar before that, relvealing
the interior (and the present), where “a ribbon and a prayer” have re-edited the appearence of these places, changing their destination.

The exhibition space in Venice that hosts the show provides the perfect setting for this project: *SPARC originates from an ancient private lagoon residence, which maintains the division into rooms typical of domestic intimacy, with a panoramic view of the canals and the navigation history of the ancient maritime republic. In homage to the history of the place and the city, Massimiliano Camellini has created a small series of images within the exhibition space itself, capturing the traces of specifically “naval” furnishings that it holds. These images will be displayed in a kind of ‘exhibition within the exhibition.’
